Rotagram

January 8, 2002

OKAY, WE MADE A MISTAKE… in the last Rotagram. The holiday for MLK's birthday is January 21, not January 14. So there WILL be a meeting next Monday. And there will NOT be a meeting in two weeks, on January 21. Sorry about the mixup. The Editor appreciates all those who called to point out the mistake. And he's still trying to find somebody else to blame it on.

NEXT MONDAY, JANUARY 14… Our own Wes Holsapple will present a motivational program called "Take It To A Higher Level."

LAST WEEK, JANUARY 7… We had an excellent program from the Mississippi Opera. Our own Josh Weiner, after recognizing a number of Rotarians who serve with him on the Opera Board, introduced Patton Rice, Executive Director of the Opera. Patton in turn introduced former Rotarian Dick Wilson, who gave us an interesting history of opera in general and about the "Orfeo" that will be presented by the Mississippi Opera at Thalia Mara Hall on January 19. Dick's wife, Lester Senter, who will sing the title role in "Orfeo," performed a Leonard Bernstein tune, "Easily Assimilated," which Dick wove into his talk. Thanks to Josh for introducing this program.

CONGRATULATIONS TO… Jud Allred, who was awarded status as an Honorary Member of our club. He joins Fred Neil and Paul Wilson in the honorary membership category, which is our club's highest honor.

YOUR BOARD OF DIRECTORS… has approved the following new member proposals. If no objection is received within 10 days, they will be introduced as new members:

  • Mary Fuller, Attorney with Dunbar Law Offices, PC. Mary was proposed by Tom Dunbar.
  • Carol Burger, President/CEO of United Way of the Capital Area. Carol was proposed by Howard Catchings.
  • Dr. Colin Harbinson, Dean of the Arts at Belhaven College. Colin was proposed by Roger Parrott.

DUES ARE DUE… You should have received a dues statement with your last Rotagram. Be reminded that there's an extra ten bucks penalty if you don't remit by February 10. Come on, gang, cough it up.

THE SWEETHEART BANQUET… on February 7 at the Country Club is in the final stages of preparation. Be sure to let Bobbie Campbell know if you plan to attend, so she can reserve you a place. There'll be a form for that at our next meeting, or you can call Bobbie at 919-2076. And don't forget to send your check for our Jackson Rotary Club Charities to Jennifer Hall.
