Rotagram

January 14, 2003

We will not meet next Monday, January 20, as we observe
the holiday celebrating Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Birthday.

NEXT MEETING, JANUARY 27Patrick Taylor, CEO of Taylor Energy, will be our speaker.

LAST MEETING, JANUARY 13Pete Boone, Athletic Director at Ole Miss, shared with the club the challenges faced by his athletic program - even with a $30 million budget - to remain competitive in the SEC. He noted that declining television revenues in coming years will further impact that budget. Ole Miss is constructing a $15 million indoor facility and a $4 million track, both of which are necessary to remain competitive in SEC events and in recruiting. Boone stated that two keys to success in modern-day athletics are academic assistance (counseling, tutoring, etc.) and year-round strength conditioning. Thanks to Ralph Ross for introducing this interesting speaker.

PLANS ARE BEING MADE… for a gala Sweetheart Banquet. The date is Thursday, February 20. The place is the Country Club of Jackson. Remember that the banquet is different this year – tickets must be purchased (at $25 per person) prior to the party. Bobbie Campbell and her committee are planning the best banquet yet, so make your plans to attend.

AND DON’T FORGET YOUR RAFFLE TICKETS… to support our Mentor Scholarship program. Tickets are $100 each, and every Rotarian is expected to purchase at least two. Contact Jennifer Hall and make your donation.

PRESIDENT’S CORNERLast week, I sent you a letter regarding increasing membership in our Rotary Club. Included were two membership applications. As stated in the letter, Rotary International requires that prospective members be "of good character, good business or professional reputation, and hold a position of executive capacity in his/her vocation or profession.” We are not just seeking numbers, but QUALITY members. All applications are reviewed by Chairman Mark Williamson’s Classification Committee as well as our Board of Directors. Your assistance in membership enhancement will be greatly appreciated. Also, don't forget the Sweetheart Banquet on February 20.
- Howard
