NEXT MEETING, MARCH 17
… we’ll hear from Governor Ronnie Musgrove.

LAST MEETING, MARCH 10… Congressman Bennie Thompson gave us a Washington update. Things are not good, he said, with unemployment up and the economy in trouble, and he feels that the tax cut did not help at all. The Congressman touched on a number of challenges in his home area – transportation, the perception of crime, and support of public education – as well as problems facing the nation, like the need for improved health insurance and a prescription drug plan. He restated his position on Iraq - that we will probably have war, but we first need to give the United Nations time to act, and “give peace a chance.” Once troops are deployed, however, he’ll support them completely. Thanks for Leroy Walker for arranging and introducing this program.

WELCOME TO NEW MEMBERS… numbers 24 through 30 of this Rotary year. Introduced to the club on March 10 were…

  • Bill Fowler, Director of Marketing, Better Business Bureau of Miss-issippi. Bill was introduced by his proposer, Bill Dawson.
  • Chris Fudge, President, ASAP Printing. Chris was introduced by his proposer, Ron Applewhite.
  • John Lee, President/CEO, Mississippi Products, Inc. John was introduced by his proposer, Gloria Johnson.
  • Marco McMillan, Executive Asst. to the VP, Jackson State University. Marco was proposed by Howard Catchings.
  • Phil Reed, President/CEO, Voice of Calvary Fellowship. Phil was introduced by his proposer, Neddie Winters.
  • Primus Wheeler, Executive Director, Jackson Medical Mall. Primus was introduced by his proposer, Neddie Winters.

POLIOPLUS IS GOING VERY WELL… and District Chairman Lewis Lipscomb announced on March 10 that we have thus far raised $10,465 toward our club goal of $22,000. This includes the amount ($50 every six months) that new members are required to donate to the Rotary Foundation. President Howard emphasized how proud he is that so many have already sent in their hundred-dollar checks. Still haven’t heard, though, from nearly two-thirds of our club.

PRESIDENT’S CORNER… As a follow-up to our letter and return envelope sent to you regarding PolioPlus, please be reminded that, as I said last week, you can bring your donation to the meeting on Monday and save a 37¢ stamp. I would especially like to thank many of you who have mailed your donations to me. The special emphasis on the eradication of polio will continue during the month of March. Our club certainly wants to do its part and donate $22,000 of the $80 million nationwide goal. Don’t forget, also, if you have not paid your dues, to do so now. – Howard
