Rotagram

May 7, 2002

NEXT MEETING, MAY 13… Mississippi Highway Commissioner Dick Hall (who is perhaps more famous as the husband of our own Jennifer) will be our speaker.

LAST MEETING, MAY 6… Ole Miss Football Coach David Cutcliffe gave us more than just a recap of the Rebels' football fortunes. After sharing several experiences and stories, he reviewed details of coaching and philosophies that have enriched his life, including the need to take care of the "little things." His description of "Get Better Monday" can help us, just as it helps his football team, start off the week with a positive philosophy. Coach Cutcliffe's passion for people, for football, and for his profession were evident throughout his presentation. Thanks to Larry Johnson for arranging and introducing this program.

DON'T FORGET… Our annual tennis tournament will be held on Thursday, May 9, beginning at 3:30 pm at the River Hills Club. If you get this Rotagram early enough in the week, you might still be able to get a slot in the tournament. The cost is just twenty bucks, and that includes court, balls, beverages (yes, beer), prizes, and appetizers after play. Contact Chairman Linda Harmon at 362-8810 for more details and to get your name on the list.

THE MENTOR SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE... has had the first of three meetings to interview applicants for scholarships. Chairman Joe Young and his committee are interviewing the top 30 applicants for these coveted scholarships, which this year will be restricted to four new ones. You'll hear more from President Roger and President-Elect Howard about what we need to do to be able to award more scholarships to these truly deserving students in future years.

THE ROTARY FOUNDATION… supports 16 major activities. One of them is the Ambassadorial Scholarship program, whereby Rotary sponsors scholars for study in a country other than their own. Since 1947, more than 34,000 scholars (including our Senator Thad Cochran) from some 110 countries have received scholarships at a cost of almost $396 million. It's truly one of the world's most impressive academic programs.

COMING UP… in May are these programs:

  • May 6: Ole Miss Football Coach David Cutcliffe
  • May 13: Mississippi Highway Commissioner Dick Hall
  • May 20: Allison Kellogg (hmm.. familiar name) on the After School Program
