NEXT MEETING, MAY 20… Allison Kellogg, daughter of our own Stuart, will talk to us about the After School Program

LAST MEETING, MAY 13… Mississippi Highway Commissioner Dick Hall gave us an overview of the work that has been done and is being done on highways in the state. The development of the Eisenhower Interstate Highway System in the 1950s and 1960s has been deemed the most important influence on urban development in our state's history, and that progress continues to this day. Even though the system was basically complete by 1969, officials are hard at work on a new North-South corridor dubbed I-69. Part of that highway will pass through Mississippi, and it will be a major asset to development in the parts of the state it touches. Dick reviewed all the factors going into the decision about the possible routes. He also reviewed the status of other highways in the state, talked about the tremendous growth in the amount of traffic on the highways, and told us about Vision 21, the plan that will guide his department's work through the next few years. Thanks to Jennifer Hall for arranging this program and for providing a great introduction. (You need to take her on the road with you, Dick.)

PLEASE NOTE… there will be NO MEETING on May 27, as we observe Memorial Day. Mark your calendars now.

AND WHILE YOU'RE AT IT… mark the date of July 1, when we'll not meet in observance of Independence Day.

YOUR BOARD OF DIRECTORS… has approved the following new member proposal. If no objection is received within 10 days, he will be introduced as a new member:

  • David Scott, Vice President of Molpus Woodlands Advisors. David was proposed by Mark Fields.

CONGRATULATIONS TO… Lee Paris, who won the club's annual Tennis Tournament last week. Chairman Linda Harmon tells us that Lee's plans to join the pro tour are at present incomplete.

THE ROTARY FOUNDATION… began a program in 1985 called PolioPlus. In that year, Rotarians pledged to raise at least $100 million to eliminate polio worldwide. At present, the Foundation has committed more than $500 million to that task, and polio is now found in only a handful of countries across the world. By 2005, Rotary's 100th anniversary, we hope the disease will be gone from the earth forever. This is one of the world's great success stories, and Rotary International can justly be proud of its accomplishment. PolioPlus is one of 18 major programs funded by our contributions to the Rotary Foundation.
