THERE WILL BE NO MEETING NEXT MONDAY, MAY 27, AS WE OBSERVE MEMORIAL DAY. OUR NEXT MEETING WILL BE ON MONDAY, JUNE 3.

NEXT MEETING, JUNE 3… Joe Young, Chairman of our Rotary Mentor Scholarship Committee, will introduce the four outstanding high school seniors who will be recipients of our scholarships for the next four years.

LAST MEETING, MAY 20… Allison Kellogg told us about her work with latch-key kids in an after-school program. Allison told us how, at age 14, she was already seriously studying dance, and found a five-year-old girl who really needed help. Allison began teaching ballet to the girl, and out of that began her intense interest in helping kids. She described the depressing statistics to us - that fewer than one in ten kids have access to any after-school program, that 2-8 p.m. is the most dangerous time for crime among juveniles, and that home-alone kids themselves are often targets of crime. She praised efforts of organizations like Boys & Girls Clubs, and urged Rotarians to volunteer to help, and/or allow their employees to do so. Thanks to proud papa Stuart Kellogg for arranging and introducing this program.

YOUR BOARD OF DIRECTORS… has approved the following new member proposal. If no objection is received within 10 days, he will be introduced as a new member:

  • Brett Couch, State President of AmSouth Bank. Brett was proposed by Alon Bee.

THE ROTARY FOUNDATION… sponsors a program called Group Study Exchange. Annual awards are made to paired Rotary districts to provide travel expenses for a team of non-Rotarians from a variety of vocations for a four- to six-week tour of educational and cultural points of interest. We recently welcomed a group from Brazil to Mississippi, and David Trigiani of our club is currently leading a team from Mississippi to Brazil. Since 1965, more than 42,000 individuals from more than 100 countries have participated, at a cost of almost $76 million.

UPCOMING PROGRAMS… Here are programs scheduled for the month of June:

  • June 3: Joe Young, Chairman of our Rotary Mentor Scholarship Program
  • June 10: Beverly Hogan, newly elected President of Tougaloo College
  • June 17: Don Phillips, Chairman of Potash Corporation
  • June 24: Dick Wilcox, BIPEC
(Note from Danny: there is no fifth Monday in June)
