May 25, 2004

We will NOT MEET on Monday, May 31, as we observe Memorial Day.

NEXT MEETING, JUNE 7… We will present the winners of our Rotary Mentor Scholarships for 2004. This is an outstanding meeting, and we’ll all want to be present. Chairman Alan Moak is in charge.

LAST MEETING, MAY 24… Linda Montgomery, fellow Rotarian and President of The Community Foundation of Greater Jackson, told us that the CFGJ connects people who give with needs that matter, providing personalized service, local expertise, and community leadership. Since its founding in 1994, the CFGJ has grown from $32,000 in assets to $13 million, has more than 100 funds, and has cumulatively provided $9.3 million in grants to deserving organizations and needs in the metro Jackson area. Thanks to Red Moffat, CFGJ’s immediate past chair, for introducing this program.

THE ROTARY SPOTLIGHT… swung around on May 24 to shine on Bruce Alt, who was spotlighted by Stuart Kellogg. At the May 17 meeting, the spotlight was on Lee Bush, who was recognized by Shelton Hand. Congratulations to both Bruce and Lee.

WOW!!... Mentor Scholarship Chairman Alan Moak announced that thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor, we’ll be able to award a total of six new scholarships this year. The Spirit of Service!

COMMUNITY CLEANUP… on Tuesday, June 1, we’ll meet at Isable Elementary School from 1-3 pm. Barbara Dorr gives these directions: I-20 to Terry Road north exit, go west on Hwy 80. Make a right turn onto Valley St., a left at Hill St., and a left to 1716 Isable. Be there!

THANKS FOR THE BOOKS… that so many of you brought for use by the Barksdale Reading Institute. These books will be given to K-3 students who have reading difficulties to take home with them over the summer. It’ll be the best use put to these books since your children or grandchildren read them!

PRESIDENT’S CORNER… First, a heartfelt thank you to our fellow Rotarian who donated funds for two additional Mentor Scholarships this year, which enables us to award 6 rather than 4. Next, remember to continue to propose new members for our club. We must all constantly be on the lookout for future Rotarians. Finally, don't forget to "lend a hand" (Rotary's theme for this year) to Barbara Dorr's cleanup campaign, Tuesday, June 1, 1-3 PM, at Isable Elementary School. The more that participate, the easier it will be for everyone. – Haden
