NEXT MEETING, JUNE 17… Don Phillips, Chairman of Potash Corporation, will talk to us about this important industry.

LAST MEETING, JUNE 10… Beverly Hogan, newly elected President of Tougaloo College, told us about her institution, with its rich history of preparing young people to "face the challenges of life." Beverly, who has an extensive background in government administration and civic affairs, as well as education, has set her sights squarely on taking Tougaloo to the next level, while retaining the characteristics that have made it an important part of the educational community. With just under 900 students now, Beverly is aiming for 1000 in the short term, and feels that 1100 will position Tougaloo exactly where they want to be. She told us about the restoration of a number of structures on campus, many of which date back to the time of the school's founding in 1869. Nine of those structures are registered as historic sites. And she envisions a civil rights museum on campus in the future, at the very place where many historic decisions were made in the struggle for equal rights. Thanks to Leroy Walker for arranging and introducing this program.

WELCOME TO NEW MEMBERS… number 32 and 33 of this Rotary year. Introduced at the June 10 meeting were:

  • Chris Snopek, Co-Owner, Performance Sports Academy. Chris was introduced by his proposer, Roger Venable.
  • David Scott, Vice President, Molpus Woodlands Advisors. David was introduced by his proposer, Mark Fields.

OUR NEW PICTURE DIRECTORY… will be printed soon after July 1. This year, we'll not have as much of a delay in getting all the material together -- we'll simply transfer electronically the information on our website, photos and all, to the printer soon after the deadline. This means that you should make sure the information we have about you on the web page (rotaryclubofjackson.org) is up-to-date and accurate. If you spot anything amiss, simply call the Rotary office (352-8500) and leave the information on our answering machine.

KUDOS TO… several members who have been in the news recently:

  • Sonny Fountain was honored on May 10 by Hinds Community College, where he's been a Trustee for 25 years, with their 3-E Award denoting Emphasis on Excellence and Enrichment.
  • Bobbie Campbell was immortalized (?) by Poet Laureate Jack Spradling (The "Duke of Doggerel") at our last meeting.
  • New member Chris Snopek was featured in a great article about his professional baseball days in the sports section of the Clarion-Ledger a week or so ago.
