NEXT MEETING, JULY 22… Our speaker will be Rica Lewis Payton, who will talk to us about Medicaid in the state of Mississippi.

LAST MEETING, JULY 14… Bob Pittman, Publisher and Editor of The Times of South Mississippi in Hattiesburg, gave us some insight into how the political process works in Mississippi. Bob shared with us several anecdotes about his 30 years as President of the Mississippi Economic Council. Bob said he learned five lessons from his dealings with the business leadership and the legislature: 1) Be Persistent, 2) Be Patient, 3) Learn where the Power is, 4) Set Priorities, and 5) Stick with your Principles. He gave several instances of each point, and concluded with his opinion about what matters most in our state today. Bob’s list of priorities for Mississippi include: Integrity, Courage, Education, Free Enterprise, Limited Government, Fairness in Business, Justice at every level of our Court System, and Truth in all things. Thanks to Don Clark for arranging and introducing this program.

WELCOME TO NEW MEMBER… The very first new member of this new Rotary Year was introduced to the club at the July 14 meeting:

  • Charles Burnham, Executive Director of the State Veterans Board. Charles was introduced by his proposer, Walter Michel.

WELL, YES, THERE ARE A FEW… changes that’ll need to be made in the committee listings on the back page of this Rotagram. These were the lists we had at press time, but we’ve heard from several chairpersons that a few people were not included. That was, of course, not intentional, but we apologize anyway. (Actually, one error was completely our fault: Mark Saxon’s name got typed as Mary Saxon. What a difference a letter makes! Sorry, Mark.) We’ll correct all errors in our next printing, which won’t be until January.

PRESIDENT’S CORNER… a note from President Howard: We are very pleased with the questionnaire results that we have received. The comments and suggestions are very interesting and informative. A second mailout has been sent thanking those who have responded and reminding those who have not to do so as soon as possible. After all have been compiled, you will receive a copy.

UPCOMING PROGRAMS… get out your calendar, and mark some dates for programs that we’ll be hearing in July and August.

  • JULY 22: Rica Lewis Payton, State of Mississippi Medicaid
  • JULY 29: Admiral John Boyington, Jr., U.S. Navy
  • AUGUST 5: Charles Doty, Lextron
  • AUGUST 12: Janice B. Brooks, Department of Human Services
