NEXT MEETING, AUGUST 11Lou Campanosa will talk to us about Tulane on the Coast.

LAST MEETING, AUGUST 4Clint Herring told us about The Township at Colony Park, a planned neighborhood on Highland Colony Parkway. The Township will fit the definition of New Urbanism, which stresses the quality of life we once knew as “neighborhood.” The Township, which will have a population of about 2,200, will combine residences of all types, retail establishments, office space, and a town center that’s within a ten-minute walk of any part of the Township. Clint described 5-foot-wide sidewalks on both sides of tree-shaded streets, with lots of open space. Stand-alone communities like this will help balance our transportation needs, and, with multi-function rather than single-use buildings, will tend to be much more resilient as changes take place over time. This isn’t just a dream – Clint says that lots have been sold, retail space is filling up, and several phases of construction are just weeks away from beginning. Thanks to Program Chairman Bill Allison for arranging and introducing this program.

YOUR BOARD OF DIRECTORS… has approved the following new member proposal. If no objections are received within seven days, he will be introduced to the club as a new member:
Emmett Crockett, Vice President for Institutional Advancement, Jackson State University. Emmett was proposed by Howard Catchings.

ALAS, OUR FAX MACHINE DIED… and, with it, about a half-dozen fax messages in its now-brain-dead memory. We now have a new machine, but we sure don’t want to permanently miss those messages. If you sent us a fax anytime after July 25, would you please send it again?

ANOTHER REMINDER ABOUT DUES… and the fact that you need to get ‘em in. After August 11 (the 10th is on Sunday), we’ll charge you ten bucks extra for a late charge. Reluctantly, of course - but we will do it. Please note that this deadline is NEXT WEEK!

PRESIDENT’S CORNER… Fred Neil, Chairman of the Care/Concern/ News Committee, advises that the following members have health issues or are unable to drive. If you can visit them, send a card, or offer them a ride to Rotary, I am sure it would be appreciated. They are Wyatt Clowe, George Donovan, Ed Lydick, Jack McLarty, and Paul Wilson. (Battle Barksdale would also have been included, but he recently resigned. Remember him anyway.) Also, friends of Bob Clinton, Jim Nickles, Ed Warren, and Ken Youngblood might invite them to visit us occasionally. As part of the family of Rotary, we need to be mindful of these members who have served us in the past and may need our services now. – Haden
