NEXT MEETING, SEPTEMBER 8... Rick Cleveland, Clarion-Ledger Sports Editor, will give us the lowdown on the upcoming football season.

LAST MEETING, AUGUST 25Col. Rick Clapp, Commander of the Vicksburg District, Corps of Engineers, told us how his organization works. The Vicksburg District consists of the states of Mississippi, Louisiana and Arkansas, and oversees all the River basins in those states. Primarily, of course, they work on the Mississippi, and he told us about work that is improving the channel, plus the overall flood control project that has been underway since 1928, following the disastrous Mississippi River flood of 1927. He also described work being done in the Yazoo River basin, the Sunflower River basin, and on four lakes that are under the supervision of his district. The Corps recognizes that its major challenge is to balance economic benefits with environmental concerns. Thanks to Deirdre McGowan for arranging this program, and to Don Clark for introducing it.

YOUR BOARD OF DIRECTORS… has approved the following new member proposals. If no objections are received within seven days, they will be introduced to the club as new members:
Chris Henderson, Attorney, Simmons Law Group, PA. Chris was proposed by Heber Simmons III.
Jim Rosenblatt, Dean, Mississippi College School of Law. Jim was proposed by Shelton Hand.
Karyn Thornhill, President, Inzinna Consulting. Karyn was proposed by Ann Neal.
Kirby Boteler, Systems Administrator, Waggoner Engineering. Kirby was proposed by Michael Caracci.

PRESIDENT’S CORNER… As a reminder, September 3 will be GOOD NEIGHBOR DAY, when florists nationwide will be giving away free roses to those who will share them with their neighbors. Brook Jacobs started this celebration a few years ago, and it’s now spread far and wide. Brook tells us that more roses are ordered for that day than for Valentine’s Day! Be sure to stop by his place on that day to get yours. - Haden
