NEXT MEETING, SEPTEMBER 15... Rotary District Governor Kay Steed will make the annual Governor’s visit to our club. LAST MEETING, SEPTEMBER 8… Rick Cleveland, Clarion-Ledger Sports Columnist, entertained us royally by talking about everybody’s favorite water-cooler topic: football. Rick covered the expectations, hopes and dreams of our state college teams, as well as the Saints. He also gave us an inside look at just how much fun it is to write a column on a game that’s not over until 10:45 pm when your deadline is 10:40. Rick, who literally grew up writing about sports (his dad was Mississippi Sports Hall-of-Fame sports writer Ace Cleveland), gave us a quote from the preface to his latest book, attributed to the late Red Smith, that sums up the way he feels about his profession: “It’s the people, not the games, that matter.” Thanks to Program Chairman Bill Allison for arranging and introducing this program.
