September 28, 2004 NEXT MEETING, OCTOBER 4… we’ll hear from Charlotte Tabereaux (why does that name sound familiar?), Director of the Mississippi Arts and Entertainment Center. We’ll also have a brief report from our Ambassadorial Scholar, David Wylie. LAST MEETING, SEPTEMBER 27… Clarion-Ledger editorial cartoonist Marshall Ramsey delighted the club with numerous examples of his work. Marshall prepares seven cartoons a week, has been nominated seven times for a Pulitzer, and is syndicated in 450 publications across the United States. Marshall, who is a cancer survivor, enjoyed a special bond with Lance Armstrong and with Kirk Fordice. The politics and personalities of Mississippi have provided much material for his cartoons. It was a real blast to review his depictions of such diverse figures as Bill Clinton, our Sheriff, our Police Chief, our City Council, the continuing Adventures of Election Man, Frank Melton, Eli Manning, Mike Moore, “the Stack”, and the continuing adventures of Kirk Fordice and Bert Case. Marshall’s motto: If you can laugh at life and its problems, you’ll be okay. Thanks to Stuart Kellogg for arranging and introducing this program. UPCOMING PROGRAMS… just so you can mark your calendar: PRESIDENT’S CORNER… It’s not often that we sing during
our club meeting, but today deserved nothing less. Mary Fuller led us in
singing “Happy Birthday” to Paul Wilson…90 years young
this coming Friday. Congratulations, Paul! Your Centennial Project/Barksdale
Reading Program is well under way. I myself have three new friends. They
attend Isabel Elementary, and we had our first reading session last week.
They are very eager readers. Barbara Dorr’s committee wants to remind
you there is still time to sign up for this semester. Training will be
done this coming Friday at Lemuria Books, during the noon hour. Finally,
we have J. D. Fly’s Rotarfest committee planning for our next Rotarfest.
It looks like it’ll be in early November - stay tuned for the exact
date. Rotarfests are always highlights of the Rotary year. - Yours in Rotary,
Danny
