October 16, 2001

NEXT MONDAY, OCTOBER 22, 2001... we'll hear from Dr. Colin Harbinson of Belhaven College. Dr. Harbinson is an international leader in the arts, and has done extensive work in Europe and Asia helping achieve greater understanding between people through the arts. He's an outstanding speaker, so consider bringing a guest or two.

LAST MONDAY, OCTOBER 15, 2001... we heard from Jim Barksdale, a Mississippi boy who truly made good in the business world. Since his retirement as the head man at Netscape, Jim and Sally Barksdale have seen fit to invest a great deal of their time and money in their home state on a much-needed emphasis on early childhood reading. Jim is a credit to business, to education, and to humanitarianism, and richly deserves his place in the state's Business Hall of Fame. Thanks to Battle Barksdale, Sutton Marks and others who were instrumental in scheduling this outstanding program.

COMING UP SOON... is one of our great opportunities to get to know each other better, and enjoy some fine food and fellowship in the process. Rotofest is what we call it, and it's a high point in our year. It's scheduled for Monday evening, November 5, at the Costas Lodge (you'll get directions on how to get there later). Rotofest is for members only, no spouses or guests, and is paid for by the club, so there's no cost to you. Mark your calendar.

GOT YOUR COPY OF "THE ROTARIAN" YET? The October issue features the Southern Tour of Rotary International President Rick King and his entourage, which, of course, included a meeting with District Rotarians at our club on July 19. On page 66, there's a photo that includes our club banner, but, alas, none of us. Good article, though. Read it anyway.

THE GOLF TOURNAMENT... just goes on and on. In addition to the BIG winners who were announced last week, there were a lot of other winners. We wouldn't dare call their achievements trivial, but... well, you make up your own mind. Here they are:

  • Sam Agnew was closest to the water (and, presumably, not "in").
  • Drew "Tiger" Middleton had the longest drive.
  • Keith "Dead-Eye" Ferguson was closest to the hole.
  • And the "brick" award for the last-place foursome was "won" by Ralph Ross, Sam Bruce, Wes Holsapple Jr., and Jim Kessler. At press time, their score was not available, and perhaps will never be.

Congratulations to all. And thanks to Jim Moss for running a really good tournament.
