NEXT MEETING, DECEMBER 9Dr. Earl Watkins, Superintendent of the Jackson Public Schools (and a relatively new member of our club) will be our speaker. We’ll also elect officers and directors next week.

LAST MEETING, DECEMBER 2… our District Governor, Jim Stanley, gave an inspiring speech about what Rotary is all about. Jim outlined principles suggested by Rotary International to make clubs more effective. He also spoke of the achievements that will be necessary to make our club a Presidential Citation winner - meeting goals in membership, participation in R.I. projects, and club programs in each of the four avenues of service. Assistant Governor Mark Doiron also attended Monday’s meeting, as did Jim’s wife Eula. Thanks to Past District Governor Jack Slater for introducing this program.

WELCOME TO NEW MEMBERS… numbers eighteen and nineteen of this Rotary year. Introduced to the club on November 25 were:

  • Marie Antoon, Executive Director, Mississippi Educational Broad-casting. Marie was introduced by her proposer, Larry Johnson.
  • Sherry Murphy, Executive Director, Kindness Foundation. Sherry was introduced by her proposer, Danny Williams.

ONCE AGAIN, FOR EMPHASIS… your Board of Directors changed the financial structure for our Sweetheart Banquet and for our Mentor Scholarship raffle tickets:

  • The Sweetheart Banquet in February is now financially self-sustaining. Tickets to attend will be $25 per person.
  • Raffle tickets, which support our Mentor Scholarship program, have been reduced in price from $124 each to $100 each. Every member is still expected to purchase at least two tickets.

CHRISTMAS CHARITIES TIME… is getting closer. Once again, on December 9, we’ll have a collection table at our meeting for your contributions toward the work we do with Senior Citizens in the area.

PRESIDENT’S CORNER… Since the first of November, eight of our members have become Paul Harris Sustaining Members - Tom Tabereaux, Clyde Muse, Judy Adams, Danny Williams, Sister Dorothea, Walter Michel, Haden Hughes (already a PHF), and Keith Ferguson (also already a PHF). Three have become fully-paid Paul Harris Fellows – Jimmy Chandler, Billy Walker (for his wife; Billy is already a PHF), and Johnny Louis. One has become a Multriple PHF – Lewis Lipscomb. Since I became a PHF several years ago, I have not made an additional donation to the Foundation; therefore, as president, I want to follow Lewis’ example and make a $1,000 donation to become a Multiple PHF. I encourage you to consider doing the same thing. Also, if you are a sustaining member, please consider becoming a fully-paid PHF. – Howard
